What is Frost Fall? When is it in 2026?

✦ About Frost Fall (Soko)

The 18th of the 24 solar terms. It is the final term of autumn, characterized by deepening morning and evening chills and the first appearance of frost. In 2026, it falls from October 23 to November 6. The next term is "Beginning of Winter" (Ritto) starting November 7, marking the start of winter in the calendar. The previous term was "Cold Dew" (October 8 – October 22).

In the 72 micro-seasons, it transitions from the first phase "First Frost Descends," to the second "Light Rain Falls Periodically," to the final "Maples and Ivy Turn Yellow" (dates are yearly estimates). It is the peak of autumn, when the leaves are at their most vibrant.

That said, this is also a time when it's easy to lose the leisure to appreciate the nuances of the season. With end-of-year project crunches and planning for next year at work, and school events, local obligations, and holiday preparations at home, your schedule can suddenly fill up.

Before you know it, November arrives without you having truly savored the autumn leaves or the autumn harvest. To prevent this, today I will introduce ways to begin "self-care" and "writing down joys" in your planner. Planners are often thought of as tools for managing appointments and tasks. However, I believe the secret to time management is increasing your "Internal locus of control."

Especially in autumn, when your schedule tends to be filled with work, family, and school commitments, why not intentionally create "appointments for yourself that you decided on" by scheduling small joys?

① How to spend Frost Fall: First, care for yourself (Self-care for the chill)

Around the time of the first frost, the temperature difference between day and night becomes significant. When you're busy, your own physical condition often gets put on the back burner. Before writing down your joys, start by noting the foundational self-care in your planner.

🗓 Weekly

Schedule one act of self-care first

Write down time for yourself—such as "an early night," "a long bath," or "a half-day with no plans"—in your weekly view alongside your work and family commitments. Just writing it down makes it harder for other tasks to crowd it out.

📓 Journal

Write just one line about your health and mood

"It was cold this morning" or "I'm feeling a bit tired"—one line is enough. As you continue, you'll begin to notice when you're prone to fatigue and what activities help you recover.

✦ Examples of Frost Fall self-care entries
Warm UpTake out light jackets for the morning/evening/Make time for a long soak in the tub
RefreshFinish switching out your bedding/wardrobe/Wipe down the room
RestCreate one half-day with absolutely no plans

② How to write "Joys" in your planner: Add autumn plans with specific dates

After self-care, it's finally time for "joys." When you're already busy and feeling tired, it doesn't have to be a major event. In fact, small joys are often better support for busy days.

✦ Examples of Autumn "Joys"
EatEat new harvest rice, mushrooms, chestnuts, sweet potatoes. Eat a seasonal sweet (even from the convenience store!)
Go OutLook for early autumn colors in the neighborhood/Walk down a tree-lined street and just enjoy the view
Solo TimeRead a book on a long autumn evening/Open the window a crack and feel the cool breeze
OrganizeChoose a new planner or pen/Tidy up the room for the year ahead
✦ FORTE DIARY TIPS

The trick is to decide on the date when you write it. Instead of "I want to go sometime," write "November 3: Go to the neighborhood park to see the autumn leaves." This ensures you secure that precious time for yourself.

③ Also write your "feelings" about the plan: A word to center yourself

When writing about joys, another recommendation is to add your "feelings toward the plan" alongside the event itself.

"So excited! I wonder if the leaves will be pretty?"
"I'll have some hot cocoa when I get back from the park."

Adding notes like "Can't wait!" or personal affirmations in your planner helps get your mind ready for the day. Precisely because this time of year is so hectic with end-of-year preparations, valuing your own time and feelings creates mental space.

④ Choosing a planner for your joys: The Forte Planner includes monthly, weekly, and journal sections

If you're going to write down your joys, the Forte Planner is perfect. With monthly, weekly, and journal views all in one, you can naturally move between "plans," "joys," and "feelings" within the same book.

🗓 Monthly

Keep monthly joys visible

Write your joys for the month in the monthly pages. Seeing one joy amidst your work appointments serves as a beacon of motivation to "keep going until then."

📅 Weekly

Balance with three pillars: Focus, Joy, and Reflection

In the weekly pages, you can separate your focus tasks, things you're looking forward to, and reflections. By consciously filling out the "Joy" column even in busy weeks, you balance your energy and state of mind.

📓 Journal

Freely express your anticipation for joys

The journal pages open flat at 180 degrees, making them easy to use. Feel free to write down, "What am I looking forward to?" or "What kind of mindset do I want to have?" As you write, you'll discover what you truly enjoy (i.e., what you value most).
